Psalm 11 (NIV84)
There are many things vying for our attention on a daily basis in ministry; some of these things are appropriate and anticipated, some are perhaps pleasantly unexpected, whilst others arrive like an arrow from the shadows as the Psalmist put it.
In the midst of the business and the busyness of our day, the abilility to distinguish the direction of God’s leading, to hear his voice alone amongst the voices of the multitudes as it were, is essential if we are to effectively minister to others.
To simply flee like a bird to the mountaintops when challenges come our way provides short-lived comfort as the problem often remains at the foot of the mountain waiting for our inevitable return to reality.
To question our responsibility in relation to the various external factors that influence us on a daily basis at both a societal and personal level is valid and necessary. In saying this we must beware the dangers of allowing ourselves to become immobilised by the sometimes seemingly impossible magnitude of the task in doing so.
The Psalmist reminds us that God has an active interest in and concern for this world and all that takes place in it, always seeking righteousness and justice for his people.
May we always look to God for the way ahead, may we always listen for his voice as we go about doing his work in this world.
