Colossians 1:15-20 (NIV84)
The Church, as the body of Christ, is a living organism – always growing, moving, and changing. But do we recognise Christ as being the head of that body or just another part amongst all the others?
As Christians we often give Christ a place of ‘prominence’ in our daily lives and in our expressions of private and corporate worship but do we give him ‘preeminence’? Is Christ just someone great amongst the rest of us or is he truly the firstborn over all creation (1:15)?
The Salvation Army’s General Evangeline Booth once said,
Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Let no [man] make you afraid. Preach Christ not merely as a gracious ornament of civilisation, to be admired and accepted or not, at will, but as the Supreme Gift to a world lost without him.
Christ is the image of the invisible God, in whom all the fullness of the deity of God dwells, and from whom we receive fullness (2:9,10). More than a partial reflection, more than just someone who possesses certain admirable characteristics, Christ is the exact representation of Holy Creator God and as such, deserving of not only a place of prominence but preeminence in every aspect of our lives.
